The following portfolio presents ideas from many American Romanticism literature works. Literature classified as American Romanticism lasted from about 1800 to 1860. Many authors we all know and love today wrote during this era, new characteristics of the American hero were established, and the writings of rationalism were completely turned around. The authors of romanticism wrote stories that we often read and enjoy still today. Washington Irving, William Cullen Bryant, Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, John Greenleaf Whittier, and Oliver Wendell Holmes were some of the most popular authors of this era. Rip Van Winkle and The Legend of Sleepy Hollow by Washington Irving are two of the most loved children's stories today that were written during this time period. In the work of American Romanticism new characteristics of the American Hero were established.
