Sitting Bull Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report
Sitting Bull was born into the Hunkpapa Tribe, which was one of seven tribes that made up a larger Sioux Tribe called the Teton or the Lakota. They lived off the land in northern South Dakota. They spoke the Lakota dialect and like other Sioux they lived off the land, by hunting and gathering. The land was their spiritual center.
The Hunkpapa hunted the grassy plains west of the Missouri River and north to the mouth of the Yellow Stone River. It was rare that they saw the white man, or the wasichus, as the Hunkpapa called them. (Schleichert 42) Sitting Bull proved he was soundly rooted in the Hunkpapas way of life and made grave efforts to persevere, as the wasichus moved into their holy land.
Sitting Bull had no problem with white men as long as they stayed out of Hunkpapa holy land. In the 1850's however, things began to change. There was a gold rush on, due to the newly discovered gold mines in California, Oregon, Washington, Idaho, and the Montana area.
