Opening of Ellis Island Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

Ellis Island is an icon of America’s immigrant heritage. Over twelve million people had landed there which today descendants account for about 40% of the country’s population. With the opening of Ellis Island a new era immigrants had appeared to discover new fate for themselves. Ellis Island opened up the world for many European peoples. Ellis Island has been around since the 1600’s and was known as Gull Island by the Mohegan tribe. After the Dutch settlers found the rich oyster beds in 1628, they renamed it Oyster Island. After the hanging of Anderson the Pirate in 1765, the island was again renamed to Gibbet Island named after the weapon that hung him. Finally, on January 20, 1785, Samuel Ellis bought the property and gave it his name, which remains the same name today. After a few generations of Ellis’s descendents, the island was bought by New York and then again sold to the federal government in 1808. The government used it as a fort, but was dismantled by 1861. In 1876, the U.S. Navy used Ellis Island as a storage compound for their 260,000 pounds of gunpowder.......
