Sullivan's Travels Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

Sullivan’s Travels There is a connection between almost every book, myth, legend, play, and movie ever written and that common factor is The Hero’s Journey. Written by Joseph Campbell the Hero’s Journey formulates a process that characters go through in almost all stories. Joseph Campbell’s model of the Hero’s Journey is strongly evident in Preston Sturges’ dramatic comedy Sullivan’s Travels. If one analyzes the movie they will notice the main character, Sully, goes through many of the stages of the Hero’s Journey. The movie begins with Sully’s “call to adventure.” The main character of the movie is a comedic director named Sullivan. In the movie Sullivan is a director of lightweight comedies, but he wants to do something different and decides to try to direct a movie about the common man and hard times. In order for Sullivan to do this he wants to live on the streets and experience the common man’s life. This is where the Hero’s Journey begins with the “call to adventure.” Sullivan wants to get away from his luxurious lifestyle and live like the poor commo......
