Bootlegging Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

In 1920 the 18th Amendment was passed, making the transportation, ownership, and manufacturing of alcohol illegal. With the passing of the amendment, the demand for alcohol increased. This demand was met with the introduction of bootlegging, the illegal transportation and manufacturing of alcohol. The most famous bootleggers were members of the mafia. With the high demand for alcohol and the suppliers being mobsters the crime and violence rate of the 1920’s increased. After Prohibition was passed, the author, Volstead, had this to say “It is impossible to tell whether prohibition is a good thing or a bad thing. It has never been enforced in this country” (LaGuardia). After the Volstead Act was put into place to determine specific laws and methods of enforcement, the Federal Prohibition Bureau was formulated in order to see that the Volstead Act was enforced. Nevertheless, these laws were flagrantly violated by bootleggers and commoners alike.
