In 1920 the 18th Amendment was passed, making the transportation, ownership, and manufacturing of alcohol illegal. With the passing of the amendment, the demand for alcohol increased. This demand was met with the introduction of bootlegging, the illegal transportation and manufacturing of alcohol. The most famous bootleggers were members of the mafia. With the high demand for alcohol and the suppliers being mobsters the crime and violence rate of the 1920s increased.
