Emerson and Franklins Ideas on Self-Reliance Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

In the story of Franklins Autobiography, his idea of conformity and order is to “let everything have it’s place and ,each part of your business have it’s time.” Whereas, Emerson had the theme of self-reliance and individuality, which to him meant that you had to trust yourself because you cannot always rely on others to help you out. Franklin starts his autobiography with his belief in morals. He believes that morals are a very important part of life. Franklin lists’ the 13 virtues that he believes are the most important to him. Franklin is known as a man of order and diligence because of how he lived his daily life. From his list of virtues he tried to follow each one day by day hoping one day to achieve moral perfection. The virtue that he found to be the most difficult out of all 13 of his virtues, was order. His definition of order was, “let everything have its place and, each part of your business have it’s own time.” In order to obtain this virtue, Franklin would write out what he did all day everyday.
