Paul Poiret Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

Paul Poiret. 1879-1944 Paul Poiret was labeled as ‘the first fashion designer’. However the time period in which Poiret was popular was very brief, from 1904 when he opened his own house and started his label, to 1914 when he joined the army in World War 1. After the war, his clothes were popular until about 1929. During that short time Poiret directed fashion for the 20th century woman, he cast aside the corset and in his own words 'freed the breasts and shackled the legs'. Poiret's designs were both revolutionary and modern for his era. Paul Poiret was born on April 8th, 1879. His hobby was designing dresses. He took 12 of these to a dressmaker by the name of Madame Cheruit at the ‘House of Raudnitz Soeurs’ and she bought them all. Poiret’s father took notice of the designs Poiret would create and didn’t approve. He tried to sway his son by sending him to work with an umbrella manufacturer hoping to give Paul realization of the more serious side of life.
