From a Slave to a Man Thomas Campbell once spoke the powerful words “The patriot's blood is the seed of Freedom's tree”. Frederick Douglass was merely a slave who was kept ignorant by his slaveholders. As a slave, Douglass was considered a piece of property owned by white folk, but disregarded as a man. To become a free man, Douglass resolves to educate himself and escape from slavery by treating knowledge as the means to freedom. Not only was education a turning point in becoming a man for Douglass, but also ending physical violence between Covey, a horrid slaveholder, and himself. Although he had gained respect as a slave, he is not fully a man until he reaches New York and weds Anna Murray. Knowledge, aggression against masters, and escaping to New York are significant turning points in where Douglass became a man again in The Narrative of Frederick Douglass. In The Narrative of Frederick Douglass, Douglass finds himself becoming a man again when he first encounters Mrs. Auld, who teaches him how to read and write.
