As a romantic artist, Harwood calls on the imagination and art to escape the mundane reality of life. Her poetry deals with nature, its endurance and ability to mock human endeavour, in addition to the dichotomous, vexed relationship between individuals and nature. An aspect of Romanticism is the prolific use of symbolism, myth and allegory as evident in Harwood’s ‘Barn Owl”. This is exemplified by the complex use of the owl as a symbol of wisdom, the feminine and an omen of death. The very idea that nature teaches the young child to value existence is a Romantic concern. Although Harwood was a deeply religious Christian (spending 7 months in a covenant at the age of 19), her work is not didactic yet it is allegorical. She uses religious iconography and allusions from both the Old and New Testament, integrating them smoothly into her work. They suggest the universality of the human experience in suggesting that the attempt to reconcile the paradoxical nature of life and the quest for spiritual fulfilment are essential human needs.
