The Scarlet Letter - The Darkness of Puritanism Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

If a town’s principles are based on religion, is it possible for society and religion to coexist? Is it possible for society to surpass the beliefs of their religion? These are questions posed by Nathaniel Hawthorne’s novel, The Scarlet Letter. By creating a story of promiscuity and scandal in a Puritan Town set in early America, Hawthorne depicts his views against organized religion at this time. Hawthorne presents these views through his juxtaposition of light and darkness in the setting and characters, through his use of diction expressing the constraints of organized religion, and through his narration of key events throughout the novel. From the beginning of the novel, it is evident that Hawthorne portrays Puritanism in a negative fashion. Perhaps the most obvious examples are the trauma and torture faced by Hester Prynne and Reverend Dimmesdale. Hester is forced to endure the punishment posed by the community for the sin of adultery she committed.
