Cry the Beloved Country Cry the Beloved Country by Alan Paton can be compared to some of the lines in the historic Gettysburg Address and also the Second Inaugural Address. Some of the lines in both addresses are historic but normal lines by themselves, but when examined side by side to the novel, these lines are symbolic and put even more meaning to the book itself. In the Gettysburg Address, the line “Now we are engaged in a great civil war” means that the nation is fighting a civil war and all chaos has broken loose. It could also mean that the nation fought over certain issues that broke apart the nation piece by piece. When comparing the quote to the novel, civil war was caused by two issues dealing with fights for freedom and/or unfair limits. These issues slowly broke apart the city of Johannesburg human by human. One issue that turned into a small riot was at the mines. Although the riot was not huge, the riot ended up causing one death.
