When discussing the literature text of “The Awakening” by Kate Chopin, one must first take into account what makes this such a great piece of feminist literature. The answer is simple, the protagonist, Edna. For the entire story, Edna is finding herself, which is shown through many symbols. The key to this piece of literature is Edna’s self- actualization. Self Actualization has three parts, naturalness, self acceptance, and detachment. "A musician must make music, an artist must paint, a poet must write, if he is to be at peace with himself. What a man can be, he must be. This is the need we may call self-actualization ... It refers to man's desire for fulfillment, namely to the tendency for him to become actually in what he is potentially: to become everything that one is capable of becoming (Maslow).” Edna is a creative artist who uses her natural born talent as a grip on her life.
