A Rose for Emily by William Faulkner takes us back in time to the post Civil War era. One element Faulkner used in writing this story is time. Time plays a major role in our lives today as well as in 1890. A Rose for Emily starts off in 1894 with the town mourning the death of Emily's father. Faulkner chose to write this story using the literary device, flashbacks, to depict the life of Emily. In using this device the story often jumps around from different times in her life.
