Sociology of Fight Club Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report
The movie Fight Club, based on the book by Chuck Palahniuk is based on a man who is plagued with schizophrenia. This is a behavior or condition that is seen as deviant in American society. This initial deviance leads the characters of the movie into a sort of downward spiral of more and more severe deviant behaviors. The film speaks volumes on the topic of deviance which according to the functionalist theorists helps to set and affirm cultural norms. There are examples of counterculture, the labeling theory, stigmas, and social control mechanisms. But in order to understand the occurrences of deviance, we will need some background on the plot.
Schizophrenic people are not aware of their other personalities. As is the same case of the main character, Jack, in the movie. Before he meets his other personality he was suffering from insomnia and told his doctor it was causing him pain. Believing Jacks ailment could be treated naturally he told Jack he wouldnt be prescribed any drugs; and also adds that if he wants to see real pain he should visit a support group for men with test......
