A Doll’s House by Henrick Ibsen is a suspenseful play including a variety of intriguing twists and turns in the plot. During the 19th century, women were extremely oppressed by society in many different ways. Nora Helmer was a woman who suffered the many effects of this oppressive society of the time. Throughout the play, Nora’s attitude gradually evolved from the shy, timid and passive woman to the strong outgoing and assertive woman. Her behavior in the story escalated to the point where she commits one of the more controversial actions of the era. Nora Helmer’s decision to abandon her family in order to start a new life for herself was not only controversial within the context of the play and society, but a necessary step in her path to self-discovery. Isben made a brave decision in creating such a controversial resolution to A Doll’s House. Regardless of the controversy surrounding Nora’s decision, I agree with Nora’s choice to abandon her entire family.
