The Rime of the Ancient Mariner

Samuel Taylor Colleridges poem, The Rime of the Ancient Mariner, is a very successful poem, in my opinion. He achieves this success using techniques such as rhythm, alliteration, personification, onomatopoeia and religious symbols which result in vivid aural and visual imagery. The poem is a story which develops from verse to verse, not only with narration, but also with conversation.
An aspect of a religious symbol is when the albatross, a bird of good omen, came to the mariners ship and the mariner inhospitably and carelessly shot the pious bird. Because the mariner committed this sin he was burdened with bad luck upon his ship,
And I had done a hellish thing,
And it would work em woe:
For all averred, I had killed the bird
That made the breeze to blow!.
The Mariner feels regretful for killing the bird that only wished well. Now he is burdened with the memory, and his crew recognises his mistake,
Ah wretch! Said they,
The bird to slay,
That made the breeze to blow!
