Justifiable Revenge in Medea Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

Justifiable Revenge A serious play with a tragic theme, often involving a heroic struggle and the downfall of the main character, is the definition of a tragedy. In this tragedy by Euripides, Medea is the heartless protagonist. Although as you read on, the reader realizes Medea’s motives and thinking lead to her instigation of evil that will come. The revenge in “Medea” is the core for all the drama, from the planning of suicide to the killing of her babies. It all ties into destiny, and to what Jason did to cause her misery, she will do to him. In other words, what goes around comes around. To go back in the story; Medea is from Colchis Island in the Black Sea, which by the “civilized” Greeks was seen as the very edge of the earth where only barbarians lived. There Medea had high social status; as a princess, a sorceress and has power. In the process of aiding Jason she kills her brother to ensure Jason’s departure, and betrays not only her father but her homeland.
