Of Mice and Men - characters Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report
In Of Mice and Men, the author has used only indirect characteristics. For example, the author does not actually tell whether Curley is short or not. What Steinbeck does is show that by using, what a person thinks/says, what somebody else think of them, what they do, their looks , how they dress themselves, how people react to them and what others say about them.
The author has made a good contrast of characters, for example Lennie with George, the one is immense, dumb and physically powerful, where the other is short and intellectual. The same is done with Curley and his wife, just a bit different, the one is mean and arrogant and the other lonely but flirtatious. Curley has only been shown on his mean side and there is no sympathy shown or created for him, regardless in any situation he is involved in. As the story involves we gain more and more sympathy for Curleys wife, though there are also parts where you begin to feel sympathy, but is gone, for example when she threatens Crooks because he is black, Listen, Nigger, you know what I can do to you if you open your trap......
