Benjamin Franklin’s purpose for “The Speech of Polly Baker” appeared to be a woman asking for equal rights. She did not want to be punished again for having a child. She has taken care of her other four children and does not think that she would be punished or whipped. She wants to explain her story for the court to understand her point of view. She also wants the court to know what she is going through and how she feels about the situation. She tells the courts what has happened with her and her children from the beginning. She was married and then her husband left her with child. She had to fend for her self and support her child. From my understanding, she became a prostitute to support her child and ended up with four children and one on the way. She did not have any intercourse with a married man. It did not matter to her; she did what it took to support and love her children. She agreed with the court and sees it as her own fault.
