The Speaker Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

Walker Gibson, author of Persona: A Style Study for Readers and Writers, gives readers something to think about when he introduces the idea of a “speaker” or “persona” in his first chapter, “Reading the First-Person-Singular.” The speaker is a created character of the author who delivers the author’s written work by speaking to the reader: “[The created speaker]…is inferred entirely out of language; everything we know about him comes from the words before us on the page” (4). Gibson goes on to explain his idea that there are two types of speakers in literature: one who sounds like a talker and one who sounds like a writer. Sentence structure and vocabulary play a big role in distinguishing when a speaker sounds like a writer or talker. Speakers who sound like talkers use an informal “colloquial” voice. They seem to leave out details/adjectives and sound quite conversational: “…you notice words and phrases that are more familiar when listening to people talking than when reading what people write” (6).
