Walker Gibson, author of Persona: A Style Study for Readers and Writers, gives readers something to think about when he introduces the idea of a speaker or persona in his first chapter, Reading the First-Person-Singular. Gibson goes on to explain his idea that there are two types of speakers in literature: one who sounds like a talker and one who sounds like a writer. Sentence structure and vocabulary play a big role in distinguishing when a speaker sounds like a writer or talker. Speakers who sound like talkers use an informal colloquial voice.
