There are, on average, about 2.4 million marriages and 1.2 million divorces taking place in the United States each year (Kreider & Fields, 2001). More than 1 million children are affected by their parents divorce. These children are traumatized emotionally before, through and years following the divorce of their parents. Not only does a parents divorce make the children emotionally unstable and affects their behavior, but it also affects the childrens future relationships. From this, we see that a parents divorce affects the childrens way of thinking, being and their future living.
If children are emotionally unstable, due to the divorce of their parents, they will turn themselves to alcohol. With the usage of the NELS 1988 1992 data set, it shows that children of the parents recently divorced, were more prone to drinking alcohol in larger quantities more often and are also more prone to be under alcohols influence while attending school.
