Is Othello A Tragic Hero? Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

In Shakespeare’s ‘First Folio’ there are twelve tragedies listed. Even today, scholars argue whether all of these should be considered tragedies or whether some should be listed as romances. In his tragedies the protagonist has a tragic flaw, has great stature at the beginning of the play, and a conspicuous character(s) plays on the hero’s flaw. The hero eventually succumbs to their own tragic flaw and becomes opposite of the character they were at the beginning of the play. Before the play ends they regain some, or all, of their former status - but ultimately die a tragic death. The play Othello is a perfect example of this. Othello’s tragic flaws are his gullibility and his jealousy. At the beginning of the play he is shown as a just and heroic General. The audience admires Othello because he does not waver in the face of danger, such as when Brabantio, Desdemona’s father, confronts him about Desdemona. Othello eventually falls victim to Iago’s manipulative skills. Othello becomes a wicked character and kills Desdemona, his one true love, out of jealousy. Without Othello’s ......
