The Scarlet Letter, Nathaniel Hawthorne - The Allegory of the Custom-House Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report
In his novel, The Scarlet Letter, Nathaniel Hawthorne writes an amusing allegory of the colonial Custom-House in which he had previously been employed. He was employed with the Custom-House while formulating the ideas for the Scarlet Letter. It is only fitting that he would write this allegory of the Custom-House. Hawthorne incorporates the Custom-House into his main character, Hester Prynne. He uses the faults, and flaws of this government post to write this suffering, and slightly corrupt woman. Noting the corrupt nature of the government, as well as its crooked officials, Hawthorne turns Uncle Sam into Arthur Dimmsdale, the local Clergyman who has an affair with Hester Prynne. This tumultuous affair brings a child into the world, little Pearl. This child represents the wild, untamed, and very young United States in which Hawthornes Custom-House was located. The Scarlet Letter is an allegorical tale in which Hawthorne tells of his time in the Custom-House.
