Metaphors by Sylvia Plath Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

Metaphors Sylvia Plath Sylvia Plath's poem "Metaphors" is a very unique way to express a pregnancy. She uses metaphors to express her opinion about pregnancy instead of just saying what she feels. Her use of diction and especially her metaphors create a feeling of despair and reflect the negative side of pregnancy. Through out this essay I will analyze each line and how they portray the negative side of a pregnancy. The first line, “I’m a riddle in nine syllables”, sets the “mood” and structure of the poem. There are nine lines in the poem each containing nine syllables. Also pregnancy is nine months long, the word has nine letters and so does the title of the poem, Metaphors. This is just one example of how cleverly written the poem is. When she says “ a ponderous house”, this gave me the feeling that she is nervous about the baby and of motherhood and could be dealing with anxiety. The line about "A melon strolling on two tendrils" shows the readers how she sees herself in the mirror. Her grown belly making her legs look like sticks. By using the word te......
