Macbeth vs. Othello Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

Are Women Really the Weaker Sex? During Shakespeare’s time, femininity was normally associated with weakness. Women were viewed as sexual objects filled only with emotions, not words. But, in Shakespeare’s Othello and Macbeth the women prove to have a great influence on the men, using their sexuality as a means of persuasion. In Macbeth Lady Macbeth dominates both the household and her husband, while the witches tell prophecies that fatally affect Macbeth’s choices. In Othello Iago makes, smart and loyal, Desdemona, appear merely young and sexual, using her as the primary instrument in his scheme. While Emilia is initially perceived as a weak character, towards the end, she shows her stronger, honest side. Through irony and the events of both plays, Shakespeare uses his multi-layered female characters to convey the “fairer sex’s” natural power. Macbeth’s Lady Macbeth and Othello’s Desdemona convince the men in their life through their feminine and sexual ways.
