Parallel Characters in Different Worlds: The Secret Sharer and Brave New World Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

To discover is to gain insight about or knowledge of an object or concept previously unseen or unknown. Discovery plays a key role in the novels The Secret Sharer and Brave New World, as portrayed by Joseph Conrad and Aldous Huxley. The writing of both Huxley and Conrad exemplifies modernist characteristics, though Conrad actually wrote in the late Victorian Era. During the modernist literary era a clear pessimism arises, represented in the novels through John’s utter disgust at the humanity of Huxley’s futuristic London and by Conrad with the Captain’s condescending narration of his crew. The Modernist era also ushers in a perspective of subjectivity in relation to values, contrary to the staunch, objective morals of past literary eras. This is embodied in Huxley’s writing by the promiscuity and material lust of humanity. Conrad’s novel illustrates this same ideal when the Captain harbors Leggatt even after his murderous behavior.
