Les Miserable-The battle field at night Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

In Les Miserable, Victor Hugo uses the stylistic devices of pacing, shift and syntax to create a fast pace in his chapter entitled “The Battle Field at Night.” Death To The Soul And Beyond Victor Hugo uses pacing in his paragraph by using anaphora, and sentence length. Anaphora is used in the form of “To” through out the paragraph. “…To plunge into an abyss, to fall, to roll, to crush, to be crushed, to see the heads of grain.” Hugo uses this to emphasize that a battle field is not a happy place, it is a place of death. Hugo also uses sentence length; he makes this paragraph one long sentence. He does this so that it is read faster. “If anything is horrible, if there is a reality that surpasses our worst dreams, it is this: to live, to see the sun, to be in full possession of manly vigor…” Hugo makes his paragraph one sentence because he does not want to scare the reader too much, this paragraph is in a way very stunning because it tells about how a man once had life but then it was all taken away.
