Transgenics - The Crops of The Future Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

Picture a world in which there is no famine, and every crop contains your essential nutrients - this is the Future of Transgenics, and as it becomes closer it also becomes more controversial. In this paper we will discuss the Background of transgenics, how they are made and what all the hype is really about. Background A transgenic organism is an organism that contains a gene, or genes which have been artificially embedded into the organism, as opposed to the gene being acquired naturally. The inserted gene(s) (transgene(s)) can come from a related plant/animal, another completely different species such as a jellyfish or a gene can be designed specifically for an organism. Likely the most well known transgene is BT (Bacillus thuringiensis) which contains a gene from the bacterium Bacillus thuringiensis (which is normally found in the soil). A gene in Bacillus thuringiensis has been isolated that produces a toxin that is toxic to many common insects, and this gene has been incorporated into crops.
