In this paper we will discuss the Background of transgenics, how they are made and what all the hype is really about.
Background
A transgenic organism is an organism that contains a gene, or genes which have been artificially embedded into the organism, as opposed to the gene being acquired naturally. The inserted gene(s) (transgene(s)) can come from a related plant/animal, another completely different species such as a jellyfish or a gene can be designed specifically for an organism.
Likely the most well known transgene is BT (Bacillus thuringiensis) which contains a gene from the bacterium Bacillus thuringiensis (which is normally found in the soil). A gene in Bacillus thuringiensis has been isolated that produces a toxin that is toxic to many common insects, and this gene has been incorporated into crops.
