Ellen Foster vs Speak Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

The entire school stares daggers at Melinda’s back. Her father's drunken jeers make Ellen shiver as she cowers in the corner of her room. Both characters live in natural homes and attend natural schools, yet both have been driven to flee from these places. Poor Ellen flees because her life amongst family is terrifying, loveless, and oppressive. Miserable Melinda flees because she believes that her school mates have grown hatred, uncaring, and is thus oppressive as well. The main characters of Speak and Ellen Foster both have some similar elements as well as some different elements. Both Ellen and Melinda are put through so much, yet they both settle and deal with their problems differently. Kaye Gibbons, the author of the novel Ellen Foster, believes that a quote from the Emerson’s “Self Reliance” is connected with Ellen’s struggle to survive and find her way in the world: “Cast the bantling on the rocks, Suckle him with the she-wolf’s teat, Wintered with the hawk and fox, Power and speed be hands and feet” (Emerson xi).
