American exceptionalism Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

American Excpetionalism Alexis de Tocqueville coined the term exceptionalism on his first visit to the United States in 1835. He stated that the United States was a nation all its own, with characteristics that set it apart from any other nation at the time. Exceptionalism today has become a focal point of American government. Debates over the position of the United States in the international community have been raging, especially among the judicial branch. The decision in Roper v. Simmons sparked this debate for its decision was partly based on international norms. The questions arises as to whether the use of international law to define its constitution is an American principle. The United States judicial system is part of larger whole of government. Although international law served to influence few decisions of courts in the United States, precedent has been towards exceptionalism because the courts mainly use the United States Constitution to interpret its laws.
