A Streetcar Named Desire * Illusion versus Reality Admitting the existence of a problem becomes even more difficult when the issue concerns the self. In Tennessee Williams’ play, A Streetcar Named Desire, he portrays his protagonist, Blanche DuBois, as a woman that lives in her illusions rather than reality. It is very difficult to Blanche to tell the truth and admit that she is somewhat insane. She believes that by altering her age, moral strength and self discipline, within her illusions, will help her fulfill her aspirations. Blanche does not want "...what's real, but what's magic." This leads to Williams’ strongest theme in his play, illusion versus reality. Williams reflects reality through his character Stanley Kowalski. Stanley is symbolic of the real world. He wants to uncover Blanche’s mysteries and is very honest to his actions, not mattering if they’re good or bad ones. He lacks of imagination. At first, Stanley can be seen by the audience as a hero but later on, after he beats his wife and rapes Blanche, you may change your conceptions of him. He sees Blanch......
