Miners During the California Gold Rush In a country that was founded by immigrants, why is it that in so many times in history groups of minorities were oppressed while the country prospered from their hard work in the society? The California gold rush was a time of great prosperity, but also a time of extreme greed and racial discrimination. The promise of “golden hills” was attractive to many foreigners who were seeking a better life. This quickly became a problem for the citizens of California, because they felt that the prosperity belonged to them. What is ironic is that these citizens were once immigrants themselves. One group of immigrants who were discriminated against because of their race in the 1850s were the Chinese. Hundreds of Chinese began immigrating to the United States, specifically California, in hopes of striking it rich to support their families back home in China. However, once in America, the Chinese were faced with unfair taxes, were not granted citizenship, and were faced with discriminatory laws which restricted further immigration. The discovery of......
