Moral and Social Conflicts in Great Expectations
Charles Dickens Great Expectations and its 1998 film adaptation, also called Great Expectations, discuss some central themes such as the moral and social conflicts the main character faces during the story. These conflicts are crucial for the main characters development and maturing into adulthood.
In the novel, the main character is Pip and in the film he is called Finn. Although having different names, the main character goes through similar moral conflicts in both medium, which are closely related to Pip/Finns uncle, Joe Gargery. Honesty is one of these conflicts, since Joe is a perfect good-hearted man, incapable of committing crimes. Therefore, Pip/Finn feels completely ashamed after stealing some of Joes working tools to help a runaway convict. In the novel, though, this is much more evident, as we read Pips constant thoughts about his wrongdoing.
