Spellbound Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

After months of preparation, Angela Arenivar misspells a word at the National Spelling Bee. Breathtakingly, Angela states, “I already feel like a champion just getting here. I mean, I think that’s enough.” This is one of many examples from the documentary film Spellbound that appeals to the audience and emphasizes an optimistic view of the world. Spellbound examines the lives of eight different children with hopes of winning the 1999 National Spelling Bee. The director and documentarist, Jeffrey Blitz, tries to convey the importance of hard work, but also that life is about more than winning. The documentarist specifically uses children in his film because life is much simpler when viewed thought the eyes of children. Blitz, the writer, understands that the audience will be receptive to a film about children and will recall the innocence of childhood to successfully convey his message, Blitz creates emotional attachments between the audience and the children in the film. He achieves this by portraying each child in his or her normal everyday life, showing the parents’ perspective......
