Lyndon B. Johnson: Portrait of a President, by Robert Dallek, gives a solid insight into LBJ the politician and also LBJ the person. Dallek discusses Johnson’s long history of political experience and his effects on the United States government, as well as the effect politics had on him, as a man. The Johnson presidency was unique from the very start. LBJ was the vice president of John F. Kennedy, the young, Catholic president everyone seemed to love. He was recruited by the Kennedy, “Irish Mafia”, campaign officials, specifically for his history. Lyndon Baines Jonson served in the Texas Senate and had established himself as a well respected politician. The Kennedy campaign saw him as an asset to their image because of his strong rooted political connections and his experience, which they needed to convince voters that JFK was capable of the job even though he was very young for a president.
