There are several sociological theories that explain the view that changes in the workplace mean that there are no longer distinct differences between non-manual and manual workers in the UK today.
Harry Braverman (1974) argued that the lower middle class are being subjected to proletarianisation. He argued that most routine, white-collar jobs have become so de-skilled, due to the advancement of technology, that they now differ little fro manual work. This means that they have lost their economic and social adavantages that they previously enjoyed over manual workers. As technology has improved, it has been used to break down the more complex white collar skills into simple, routine tasks. As a result, the workers have lost control over the work process and are now more like factory workers.
However, Marshall challenged this view. He found that, in a national random sample of female workers, it was mainly manual workers who claimed that their work had been de-skilled. Over 90% of non-manual workers felt that little had changed and that they were as likely to to identify thems......
