Soliloquies in Hamlet Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report
To be or not to be that is the question (III.i.56). This is one of many questions that Hamlet ponders in his soliloquies. It is these soliloquies that reveal Hamlets inner character and enable us to follow his development throughout the play. He starts off being hesitant to take any action and just over thinks everything. Then with a sudden turning point, Hamlet becomes someone who takes rash action with little or no thought. In the five soliloquies of this play, we see how Hamlet significantly develops as a dynamic character.
In the first soliloquy, Hamlet is outraged with the death of his father and the remarriage of his mother to his uncle Claudius. He criticizes his mother and states O God! a beast, that wants discourse of reason, /Would have mourned longer, (I.ii.150-151). To show the insignificance of Claudius, Hamlet devalues himself saying that Claudius is no more like my father/Than I to Hercules (I.ii.152-153). This shows us his continual disgust with Claudius. He prefers death over dealing with his problems and even considers suicide, O! that this too ......
