Reactions to Bertonneaus An Overview of Barn Burning Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

Thomas Bertonneau analyzes the characters of Abner and Sarty Snopes in his “An Overview of ‘Barn Burning’,” critiquing each regarding their basic personalities, how they affect the world, and how the world, in return, affects them. Bertonneau begins by revealing Abner’s character in it’s most unsavory light. He describes Abner as “unassimilated and perhaps inassimilable to society” because of his inability to interact normally with other people. Bertonneau infers that Abner’s behavior is due to his feelings of insuperiority struggling against his oversized ego. He validates his analysis of Abner by referencing the first encounter with him in the story. At the opening of the story, Abner is on trial for arson, for which they are unable to find him guilty. When the justice ordered Abner to leave town, Abner retaliated that he had already planned to leave. According to Bertonneau, this is proof that he had therefore refused to accept authority by foregoing it as his own predecision. In his conclusions, Bertonneau makes comparisons of Abner to the Devil himself, listing Abne......
