21 to Drink: Failed Law? Is lowering the legal drinking age really going to help prevent binge drinking, or is it just a ploy for universities to escape having to deal with underage drinking on their campuses? This question is very interesting to me because it’s more than just a matter of whether or not it’s a good idea to change the legal drinking age. It’s a significant question because it affects the lives of everyone around it, not just the 18 year olds who want to legally drink before 21. I would assume the general public would agree that this lowering of the legal drinking age is a bad idea. But, what I found here in Albuquerque would seem to prove the opposite. With this question there are those for and against changing the legal drinking age. The main group involved with pushing to change the legal drinking age is the Amethyst Initiative. It is a group comprised of 100 plus universities and their presidents.
