The impact of World War Two was overall, significant in the process of decolonisation in Indochina. The implications of the war can be assessed through the understanding of the immediate and subsequent effects it had on the nation. Not only did World War Two provide a stimulus to nationalism for the people of Indochina, it was the trigger that started the first part of the so-called war of liberation - the beginning of three decades of war in Indochina that would eventually rid them of their imperialistic colonisers, the French.
Frances Indochinese Empire began to fall apart during the Second World War, when it was occupied by a foreign power. When France was defeated by Germany in mid-1940, a pro-German government was set up in Vichy. Frances Vichy government obliged to Germany by allowing their ally, Japan, to occupy Indochina. Important to Japans war strategy, Indochinas abundant supplies of rubber, coal, and rice, were used by the Japanese during their occupation.
