They rival each other by competing for T.V. time and publicity. Protective equipment and physicality go hand in hand. In these two sports the amount of equipment used reflects the amount of physical contact. Hockey players equip themselves as if they are going to a medieval battle reenactment. All these pieces of equipment are used to protect a player from a 250 pound player crushing you into the boards.
