Myceaean Greece Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

Mycenaean Greece The ancient literature of Greece began with two epic poems, The Iliad and the Odyssey, written by the poet Homer. In Homer’s works, he both foreshadows to classical Greece and is reminiscent of the Mycenaean world (Webster 298). In order for Homer to use the Mycenaean world as a setting for his epics, he “inherits a tradition which descends from the singers of Mycenaean palaces” (292). For people to better understand the setting and characters of Homer’s writing, one must explore the civilization of Mycenaean Greece. Although the term “Mycenaean” should be used strictly for the inhabitants of the ancient Greek city of Mycenae, archaeologists have coined the term to refer to the civilization of Greece in the Late Bronze Age (Samuel 1). When looking for evidence on this ancient civilization, archaeologists have taken into account Homeric epics which concern historical facts of the Mycenaean period.
