Dulce Et Decorum by Wilfred Owen Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

The poem “Dulce Et Decorum” written by Wilfred Owen reveals the truth and reality of World War One. The propaganda of the time encouraged young men to join the army with positive statements. In this poem Owen creates the impression that the war was not all fun and games but is rather an example of hell. He wanted people to know that the lives of soldiers was torturous, they saw their friends die, they were forced to stay up on duty, they were often injured and they had to live in very poor conditions. Wilfred Owen gives the immediate impression in stanza one that the war is not as ‘glorious’ as propaganda suggests. The simile ‘Bent double like old beggars under sacks,’ is effective as it shows how weak and desperately tired the soldiers are. It shows that the men are struggling to survive. The metaphor ‘men marched asleep’ gives the impression that the soldiers are being forced to stay awake and do and get almost no sleep. The metaphor ‘Drunk with fatigue’ continues to tell us how extremely exhausted the soldiers were, unable to stand or walk straight. Owen uses the verb......
