Abstract This article will look at the labour dispute that took place between the NHL and the players, represented by the NHLPA, in 2004-2005. It will outline the issues leading up to the lockout, the two parties’ demands and the collective bargaining agreement that was the result.   The times were bleak and in early February the times reached their darkest point as the National Hockey League announced that the 2004-2005 season would officially be cancelled. This announcement came as the two sides in the labour dispute reached a point of no return and agreed to terminate the season. The two parties at ends in this dispute were the aforementioned NHL, which was made up of the thirty owners of teams in the league and the other party was the NHL Players association, representing the players. In the year 1994 the two sides came together and created a collective bargaining agreement that would last the duration of ten years and of course this was where the issue once again became of the upmost importance (3).
