Why did the Civil Rights Movement develop in the 1950s? Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

The African-American Civil Rights Movement of 1955 to 1968 was not the first of its kind, yet some of the more prominent figures of the Civil Rights Movement came to the public eye during this time. These prominent figures, and the determination for change, were driving forces in the development of the Civil Rights Movement in the 1950’s. One of the reasons the Civil Rights Movement developed in the 1950’s was because of Oliver Brown – a minister and plaintiff in the U.S Supreme Court case Brown vs. Board of Education in 1954. In the summer of 1950, Brown and 12 other parents from Topeka, Kansas, tried to enrol their children, who were black, in local de jure white schools, instead of sending their children to the nearest black schools, which were sometimes several miles away. When they were refused, the National Association for the Advancement of Coloured People (NAACP) stepped in to help. The NAACP hired lawyers to help fight the Board of Education for Topeka, and, when the judge ruled in favour of the Board of Education because of the Plessy vs. Ferguson Supreme Court Case o......
