Oryx and Crake Imbalance Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

In the words of Abraham Flexner, “Science, in the very act of solving problems, creates more of them.” This shows the imbalance of science and ethics, which is very prevalent in today’s advanced society and is thoroughly explored through the society created by Margaret Atwood, in her novel Oryx and Crake. The disproportion of power between ethics and science causes Snowman, our hero, to deal with isolation and overwhelming emotions. When the world turns silent and society comes to an end, solitude provides survivors with a struggle for survival along with selfishness. This is demonstrated during Snowman’s journey to find food, as he constantly hears voices and responds to them, thinking they are real. Moreover, vast, uncontained emotions occur when science and ethics battle over power, which is shown in the novel when Jimmy is woebegone after he finds his mother has run away form home due to the science versus ethics issue.
