I. Introduction Tyco was a conglomerate business that manufactured a diversified set of products, with over 300 individual profit centers. It was founded in 1960 as a R&D laboratory and went public in 1964. The early strategy was one of rapid growth through acquisition. In 1973, under new leadership, the strategy became even more aggressive through more hostile acquisitions. This strategy transformed the company from a $41million manufacturer to a $574 million conglomerate in 9 years. In 1982, once again under new leadership, a third strategy was adopted. This was one that strove for operating performance. At this time the company had a large amount of debt and excess in management and spending. Costs were cut, and corporate staff was reduced. Nonproductive assets were sold and used to reduce debt. The company was organized into three core business segments: Fire Protection/Flow Control, Packaging Materials, and Electronic and Electrical Components.
