LA Confidential (1997) is film set in the Hollywood suburbs in the 50's, with the main focal point being around a certain police station. Many connotations can be attached to the film because of these aspects. Three types of signifiers were identified by Charles Peirce (Branston 2003:17); iconic, symbolic and indexical, which can all be found in the film. The indexical signifier of a flash is used by Curtis Hanson as a reference to cameras, an example of this can be found in the opening montage sequence. This draws on the 'code' (Hall cited in Branson 2003:18) of the camera within Hollywood films and connotes celebrity, the paparazzi and glamour. The movie posters found throughout the film are examples of iconic signifiers. They are a constant reminder of the setting of the film and the obsession of the suburb. The most frequently used signifiers are symbolic and they are used in a clever manner to reinforce and illustrate information about characters and the plot.
