One of the ongoing themes that drove Douglass to success is ignorance; slaveholders tried to keep their slaves ignorant to reality. When Douglass begins his journey he knew neither his exact birth date nor who his birth father was. All he knew was that he was different from the white boys, yet could not understand why.
