"Embryonic stem cell research offers both great promise and great peril"  (Bush, George. Televised Speech. 9 August, 2001). Stem cells are the simplest form of a cell that has the ability to divide indefinitely into a wide variety of cell types. This ability they have has been given the name "developmental plasticity" (Panno xi). Their level of plasticity can vary depending on how young the stem cell is and from where it is derived. Fertilized eggs and early embryonic cells have the highest level of plasticity, being able to form into all of the body cell types. The level of plasticity drops quickly, as development of the stem cell progresses, meaning as they get older, they can only form into a limited range of cell types before they assume their final form that divide only into cells of its own kind. That is why scientists see more potential in the younger embryonic stem cells rather than the adult stem cells that have limited activity.
